Like the majority of the western European countries we have seen a great reduction in accidents in Denmark the past 30 years. In 1971 the number of road fatalities was almost three times as high as in 2000. During the same period the traffic grew from 22 to 44 billion vehicle km. A great reduction in the frequency of accidents has taken place - road traffic is now more than five times safer than it was 30 years ago.
